Planting at Pembroke Wood and RockenhamPlanting at Pembroke Wood/Rockenham

A key area at the entrance to the town, formerly overgrown, was cleared by Cork County Council and planted with a variety of attractive shrubs and perennials.

The large grassy area at the entrance to Passage West had been littered and overgrown for many years. During Project 2006, the area was cleaned, the overgrowth was cut back and the grass was trimmed. Because of the initial effort from the community, Cork County Council has committed to keeping this grass cut henceforth.

Flower baskets

The Area Development Association paid for the purchase and planting of 15 large flower baskets, some of which were given to businesses in the town and others of which were hung in key areas along the main street. These cheerful baskets greatly brightened up the town throughout the summer.

Street signs

Special street signs commemorating the sailing of the Sirius from Passage West to New York were erected at some key locations throughout the town. These unique street signs were obtained by the Town Council through a grant and have done much to encourage pride of place in Passage West.

Clearance at Toureen

A very attractive green space in the town had become dense with growth over time. Cork County Council undertook a huge clearance in this area, thereby improving views of the harbour for both residents of Toureen Terrace and those driving through the town.

Vegetation clearance

Through the dedicated efforts of a number of individuals, growth was removed from old stone walls throughout the town and particularly outside the Star of the Sea primary school. Weeds growing along footpath and road verges were sprayed at the beginning of the summer season.

Community litter picks

Litter picks for all willing to take part were organised for Saturday mornings and Wednesday evenings throughout the drier months.

Painting of houses and businesses

Thanks to property owners who got out and brightened up the town by painting their houses and business premises. It is estimated that there has been more painting done in Passage West this year than in all the last 10 years put together!

Painting of seats and railings

One dedicated member of the Area Development Association took the time to clean and paint all the timber seats and railings at Glenbrook, thereby making them very attractive and prolonging their life by many years. Thank you!

Bollards at Glenbrook slip

These were installed by Cork County Council to deter cars from parking on the green space adjacent to the slip. The green space in this area is an attractive visual amenity.

Parking for fishing

The R610 between Glenbrook and Monkstown is one of the most popular fishing locations in Cork Harbour. But parking of cars in the ditch along this part of the road had been drawing mud and debris onto the public road. Cork County Council cleared back part of this ditch and laid tarmacadam to facilitate parking for those wishing to fish between Glenbrook and Monkstown.

Fencing and planting at the library

Cork County Council installed a very attractive railing between the library car park and Fr. O'Flynn Park, planting a flower bed along its length. This has very much improved the vista towards the library from Fr. O'Flynn Park, the permeability of the park and the attractiveness of the car park.

Cleaning the wall at Dock Street

Cork County Council undertook the powerhosing of the large railway wall between Dock Street and Beach Road. This was a major undertaking not attempted in years. With the green slime removed, the rich colours of the Old Red Standstone from which the wall is constructed brightened up the street. The Area Development Association then organised the hanging of flower baskets on the wall.

Replacement of litter bins

Old litter bins in Passage West were removed and replaced with newer models designed to discourage dumping of household rubbish.
