The library at Passage West offers fiction and non-fiction books for lending. It has a reference section, some material relating to local history, a range of CDs and tapes and a selection of audio books for adults. Internet access through broadband is available for members, although advance booking is advisable. Printing is also available. The Irish Examiner , the Irish Times and the Carrigdhoun can all be viewed by both members and non-members.

Finding and requesting books

If you are looking for a particular book in the library, please just ask Rita, the librarian and she will be delighted to help. Alternatively, you can online search through a new service called borrowbooks.ie. BorrowBooks.ie searches across Irish public libraries' online catalogues to locate any book by keyword, title or author. If the specific book you require is not available in the Passage West library, BorrowBooks.ie will allow you to request that the book will be delivered to the Passage West library and you will be notified once it has arrived.

If the specific book you require is not in stock in libraries in County Cork, the Passage West library will try to obtain it through its interlibrary loan service.

Mobile Library

Cork County Council operates a fleet of six mobile libraries, one of which serves Monkstown. The mobile library carries fiction and non-fiction reading for adults and children, books on tape, free Internet access and a free request services for books which are not in stock.

The mobile library calls to Monkstown on Tuesdays. Its first stop is opposite The Bosun at 11.30am and its second is at the Sandquay at 12.00noon. It announces its arrival with a long blast on the horn.

The mobile library may make house calls for those with special needs, if it is logistically possible.
