Glenbrook and Monkstown are fast becoming one of the most popular shore fishing locations on the west side of Cork Harbour. The footpath from Glenbrook to Monkstown is a particularly popular spot – come early to stake your claim. The pier at Monkstown can be fished both during the day and night as it is well lit. The sea wall beside the footpath at Monkstown Creek is also well fished. This part of the harbour is good for cod, conger, mackrel, dogfish, whiting and flounder. The West Passage is renown for its winter codling on an incoming tide. In all locations, you need to take care with pedestrians, passing cars and other water users.
For those wishing to go to sea, there is plenty of charter boat angling available around Cork Harbour with local operators working out of Glenbrook. This is a wonderful opportunity to get out into the picturesque waters of Cork Harbour while enjoying some excellent fishing. Angling is practised mostly at anchor off marks such as the Smith’s Rock, Power Head and Daunt Rock and drifting at the harbour entrance is also very popular. The main species to be found are conger, ling, whiting, cod, pollack, plaice, cuckoo and ballan wrasse and rockling. Shark are fished in late summer. You will find that the boats available for hire are powerful, well equipped and fully insured to take a number of passengers, while the skippers will be knowledgeable and able to provide guidance on all aspects of fishing in Cork Harbour.
