14/05/2013 Celebrating 175th anniversary of trans-Atlantic steamship, Sirius
One hundred and seventy five years ago, the Sirius became the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean from the original Port of Cork, Passage West, to New York. Its captain, Richard Roberts who is buried in Passage West later became a Freeman of Cork.
To celebrate this and the other rich maritime heritage of Cork Harbour and ‘The Gathering 2013’, Passage West-Monkstown River Users’ Association and the local town council with the support of clubs and organizations are holding a week of festive and cultural events from May 17th to 24th. read more
